We’ve all heard the stories of people trying and trying BUT then giving up…

The problem is they may have given up just a little too soon.

However, I would be the first person to agree (read Seth Godin’s book about this) that sometimes you have to make a choice to leave what you’re doing in order to seek a better opportunity. As long as it’s for the right reasons and not your lack of effort or that you’re kidding yourself.

This information applies to just about anything else in life but I am referring specifically here to team building and a Home based Business (network marketing, MLM).

It does mention a company name a few times but the information is very valuabale and will help you build your present or future business.

This proven and relatively simple model seems to “baffle” people IN and OUT of our profession…

We’ve all heard some form of the following statement:

In 2010 the Direct Sales Association reported over $125 Billion dollars in sales (proven model; that’s a huge number) and this was done by over 75 million men and women around the world (global and tons of people earning part-time and full-time income).

Therefore, the point isn’t whether or not it works but rather HOW do YOU learn to succeed in Network Marketing.

Network Marketing, MLM, Multi Level, Referral Marekting, Home Based Business (you choose your favorite term), is a business where you’re offered a product(s) and the chance to earn income by selling (or sharing for you sensitive types) that product and by building a “network” of people that do the same as customers and business builders.

The amount of money you make will be based on the amount of product volume that “flows” on a monthly basis through your team.

I use to own 3 mortgage offices with about 40 loan officers and a real estate franchise with another 50 or so agents, so let me use this traditional model in real estate and business to explain the foundation of network marketing.

Let’s say you could hire 100 full-time and professional salespeople to work for you, giving them each a geographic sales territory and a sales quota of $10,000 in sales per month in commissionable income to reach one million in gross commissions. (100 people X $10,000 = 1 million).

Of course, this is gross and before splits, overhead and other expenses but a good illustration; let’s keep going.

Network Marketing is a form of direct selling (like Real Estate) but there are some key differences. As a Network Marketer, you would shift your thinking and strategy in order to achieve that same 1 million dollars in sales.

Instead of full-time, professional salespeople with high sales quotas (that many agents and loan officers rarely hit month in and month out), Network Marketing is based on satisfied customers, many of whom do not like to sell at all, but they are happy to tell others about the above-average products they use on a regular basis.

These customers (and/or Brand Partners) are not full-time or part-time employees. They are some-time, spare-time, part-time (some are full-time) independent army of volunteers with no sales quotas and no geographic sales territories.

They “work” with whom they want to and when they want to…

Network Marketing is not really about personally selling a bunch of product but some Brand Partners do. It’s more about about using, recommending and selling the product and finding a lot of others to do the same.

Hmmm…could it be this simple? Yes….!

The key to generating income is to refer and recommend others to your company (and products), who then do the same and then they refer it to people you may not even know but they basically follow the same pattern over and over again.

So, Network Marketing is a lot of people each doing a little bit each and “connected” through this network that creates volume through product consumption and sales for the creation of a business and income.

Remember my Real Estate example?

100 Real Estate agents/Loan Officers (Professional salespeople) each sell $10,000 in sales (commissionable income)

OR

5,000 Independent people that choose to use and refer products of $200 each as an example (use a $100 and sell $100)

In both case, you generate $1,000,000.00 dollars (one million) in monthly volume.

In the Real Estate business model you may pay out about 80%+ in commissions and benefits to the sales force and then have TONS of fixed and floating expenses and although this gross sales number may seem huge; it is probably closer to an adjusted income of $50,000 a month. Not too shabby; right?

In fact, pretty good as long as you have large resources with great start-up and ongoing capital, can deal with 100 salespeople, the corresponding staff and that you are fine with the ongoing overhead, legal and financial liability as well as the responsibility this model requires. I’m not being critical here as I did this for 20 years and we’ll save economic downturn, plunging real estate prices and more for another post.

That same Network Marketing example is for someone that would take the business serious enough to equate to having a successful “traditional business”. One million dollars in monthly sales in this model may be $50,000 to $100,000+ per month in income BUT with no huge start up capital (come guys and gals….$200 to $1,000 to get into a business is peanuts in comparison), no employees, no rent, no major liability, huge overhead, etc.

…BUT it would require effort, perserverance and learning the skills and leadership to reach these levels.

This is why an effective marketing system, a training platform, support, a super stable company and good coaching is vital to your success…

Let’s conclude….

If you’re capable of committing, learning and growing a traditional business as I mentioned above, then you can most certainly build a huge check in Network Marketing and many have…(you define huge; not me as $3-5-10k a month can change the lives of many and we haven’t even discussed the freedom this model affords. My wife, twins and I lived 2+ months on the coast of Mexico in 2011…try that with a job!)

Learn the foundation of the business model, then simply pick and choose your level of participation.

Ahhhh. Free Enterprise!

In other words, start wherever you are today.

That could mean choosing a stable and long term company that has been around at least 5 years (sorry, start-ups and pre-launches are too risky in my opinion and I don’t care about the ground floor deal that pays 210% commission with a triple binary forced worldwide matrix and double payout on Tuesdays…Forget about it!).

The company you select should be long term and not the flavor or idea of the month (you don’t want to re-build…trust me). Ideally they manufacture their own products (less than 20% of companies in Network Marketing do..) and the products should be something that you like, that makes sense AND…AND that has mainstream and broad appeal, (men, women, young and old…the masses).

There ARE differences in compensation plans, so get the details as the difference can be huge if you miss this part and finally “ask” the person that may be your enroller about their system, team buiding, support, training and can they actually help you? If it makes sense go for it; it it doesn’t, find one that does…

Network Marketing is a business model that has come full circle and it’s time has come into the mainstream…

There is no denying the model works and that over $125 Billion dollars in sales were generated last year is great evidence of this growing niche coupled with the millions and millions of men and women participating part-time or full-time in this profession.

The truth is the model is simple and based on referring products or services to others…but that’s just the beginning!

We all have our opinion as to whether it is the products or the compensation plan that should be the “best” but the reality is network marketing is a leadership factory and the products and other things are a by-product of this all.

I recently got off the phone with someone that really didn’t understand the basics of network marketing.

He had some mistaken ideas about how it all works and what you have to do.

Well, after a little explaining and discussion he got real excited and I also had a light-bulb moment!

Here are some key points from that telephone conversation:

1) You DON’T have to be a super salesperson or a mega-recruiter.

What you need to understand is geometric progression and what is needed to get that ball rolling with a simple part-time effort.

2) Systems-Be the Messenger and not the Message!

This seems to elude most people but what is needed is a system with “simple to implement” tools that allow the baker, the butcher and the candle stick maker to all to see success (money, profit, cash flow) in network marketing. Learn this, teach this and fly!

3) The truth about 5 that enroll 5 that enroll that enroll 5….

We know this doesn’t happen 100% like this because we are dealing with people but what happens even if you screw this up…as long as you still know how to drive depth. This still means success!

4) I’ve tried and failed, tried and failed in network marketing.

You must understand (most just don’t know) and what you’ve been doing incorrectly. A simple 3 step process will make the shift from failing in network marketing to seeing success and having a growing team.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result….

2011 has been a challenging year for people in the continued condition of the economy BUT what are you REALLY doing about it?

NO RAH RAH post today and I want to get down to the nitty gritty of what you and I are really going to do in order to make 2012 better than 2011, how you can create a breakthrough and insuring that you’re not doing the same thing over and over for 2012 because then you may get a result you don’t want.

It’s funny I’ve been a full-time earner for some time now but I hear “know it alls” that are earning little to no money dispense advice and their “fake till you make” isn’t being bought by anyone anymore.

Let’s get real, let’s get humble, let’s STOP telling ourselves (and others) the “stories” about why this or that and let’s lock arms and really create a breakthrough for 2012 and beyond. It’s the best for you and for the profession…

You may or may not know that I’m a full-time network marketer and you may not even truly understand what I and others do to create a good income in this honorable and growing profession.

If you think network marketing is about selling soap to your neighbors, being a great salesperson or being like your dumb brother-in-law that’s so annoying at the company get together’s then STOP because you have it all wrong.

I won’t get all defensive or statistical but simply tell you that direct sales generated over 110 Billion Dollars (With a B…) in sales for 2010 and by all predictors it is becoming more and more a viable option due to the stagnant job market and worldwide economy in general.

What am I saying?

Most people, even those in network marketing have no idea how our profession works, how to build a team and volume, what systems to use and I want to demystify that for you in this post.

Network Marketing is the movement of products and services primarily through word of mouth advertising or referrals. People purchase products, they get linked to your “referral line”, downline, team, group or whatever you prefer to call this and the volume creates commissions.

In order to get people to understand, we usually show an income illustration something like this:

Here’s what you do Mary…

Enroll 5 people (that purchase the company products)

Those 5 enroll 5 each for a second level of 25 on your team

Those 25 enroll 5 each for 125 on your third level

Those 125 enroll 5 each for 625 on your fourth level…

That’s 780 people on your team and a good to great income depending on the company compensation plan.

Now…..It NEVER works out EXACTLY like this because we are dealing with people. Some will no nothing, some will do little and a few will RIP IT UP and go bonkers! The above is for illustration and to teach the foundation.

Well…you get the picture; right?

My goal is is not to explain compensation or state if you should be in a binary, uni-level, matrix, stair-step, triple whammy do-dah or whatever.

My goal is to help you gain a better understanding of what network marketing is because you may have been introduced to this profession by a person that approached you all wrong and now you have a less than positive vibe, you don’t think it works or maybe you’ve been in 3-4-5 network marketing companies and you can’t seem to be profitable, you can’t get it going….(Hint: you may be doing it wrong).

Who “does” network marketing?

Lawyers, accountants, stay-at-home moms, real estate agents, stock brokers, construction workers, yoga instructors, young people with less than exciting job options, baby boomers looking for more stability and everyone in between.

Network marketing works if you understand the business model, if you have a good coach or mentor that will actually teach and help you and do more than just “get you in”.

When I say it works, I’m not promising wealth, fame and riches to everyone; that’s on you!

Nor do I want to convince those that want to explain saturation or some other mathematical non-sense to me.

The truth is 95% of people in network marketing are part-time and would be happy earning an “extra” $500 or $1,000 a month.

If your goals are bigger, if you have a stronger WHY to succeed…then do it!

The truth is right now is a great time to start or re-start as well as be positioned for growth not only in 2012, but beyond as I feel the face of our economy and job market has forever changed. Let’s go back to being independent to being entrepreneurs and if that scares you or you don’t know how…find others to help you as the information and training is readily available.

Here’s a total generic video that explains in about 7-8 minutes the basics of network marketing so you can a gain solid understanding of this. If you want 2012 to bring you more financial abundance then I encourage to watch, listen and learn. No worries, there’s no opt-in, no pitch, no company mentioned and a totally generic video that I simply feel is useful to gain a basic understanding of this profession.

Network marketing is a great option and beats the pants out of getting a part-time job, not to mention the tax write offs for having your own business; yes, a network marketing business.

Maybe you want 2012 to be a Breakthrough year financially and want/need to replace an income of 5k a month, 10K a month or more. It takes work but network marketing is a great vehicle to get you there and with the right company and coach; you’ll get there.

My final comment is to STOP chasing Bright-Shiny objects or the idea of the week or month.

If you’re an expert, have a subscriber list and can manage multiple streams of income and do it effectively; then great.

However, for the 95% plus that just want to make extra money and that want to run a profitable business you need to consider the following:

* Join ONE network marketing company and commit to it for 12 months (I’ll try it for 30-60 days never works)

* Choose a long term and stable company with products that appeal to the mainstream market and not just to the distributors that want to make money. I advocate you stay away from the new idea of the week and simply use your “head” as to whether you feel you’re aligning with a long term solution or not.

* Choose a sponsor whom you feel will teach and train you to succeed. I don’t mean join the GURU because even though they may be very successful, they most likely don’t have the time to help you along the way. Choose wisely…

* Make sure your company or the team has a system. A system is important so that you (and those you enroll and they enroll, etc) can be the messengers and the “system” becomes the consistent message. A good system replaces the need to be a superstar salesperson, a compensation or products expert, etc. Plus it has more mass audience appeal when people know what to do, that they CAN do it, etc. I’ll post more about systems in the near future.

There are more things to consider but network marketing offers the masses a way to get into business now, without large start-ups costs or large ongoing expenses such as rent and employees.

Learn and gain an understanding, decide, take action and fly!

Time and Money Freedom:

To me it means earning a good to great income and having the time to enjoy your life.

It doesn’t mean you have to earn one million dollars a year; it means that you earn enough to fund your lifestyle in a manner that offers you choices such as no alarm clocks, coming and going as you please, funds to do the things you want such as travel, college education for your children or grandchildren and why not…accomplishing some of the things on your “bucket list”.

Choices…

For others, it can mean simply more choices with earning an extra thousand or two thousands dollars a month.

It’s often overlooked but what can this “extra” money do for you, for your family, how would it make you feel and what would it to for your lifestyle?

Unless someone is living in a cave or in total denial…there is now so much mainstream evidence to support that a Home Based Business and/or Network Marketing is a growing trend.

Direct sales exceeded $125 billion in 2010 and U.S. Census reports state that as much as 49% of households are involved in some Home Based Business.

However, this is where we must separate the hype from the reality….

As much as I support the profession I DO NOT support the hype that tells you that you can join something for free, do very little and make a bunch of money!

I also don’t think that because some GURU is walking across stage because he/she is earning 50-100k a month; that this should somehow blind you to select a company, compensation plan and more as part of your decision and what’s best for YOU.

In fact, this is a terrible way to choose a company by the mere fact that someone else is earning X dollars.

Take time to understand how you’re going to get paid and what you need to do in order to earn that “residual” income and don’t confuse one-time bonuses, fast start bonuses, 8-9-10 ways to get paid and more with residual income.

I say this because, most people get into this profession because they want to do the work to build a team, (large or small) and then enjoy residual income. That’s income that pays you month after month even though you already did the work and now you simply continue to drive your business but with lots of time freedom.

In a minute, you’ll be able to watch the totally generic video (no products, company or sales pitches) about this profession in order to begin to understand how to succeed and develop a successful business.

However, I want you to know that network marketing is like any other business as far as treating it “like” a business, putting in the effort to succeed, thinking and acting like an entrepreneur, creating goals and a plan to succeed, etc.

The difference stops there as there is a huge upside income potential but with a low start up cost and investment.

This business model does not require any prior experience and you don’t have to be the “sales” type to succeed but you should be someone that is willing to learn a system and then teach it so others can succeed as this is a main premise to team building.

Often times, (not always) there is a willing coach or leader to teach and train you and help you get started right. This is a key component in my opinion as you will want to connect with someone that you feel can help you and they don’t have to be the guru on stage but should be someone accessible, that you trust and that you can see team building with now and later.

This business offers little to no risk and yet you have the chance to build an ongoing residual income and you can even begin part-time (not spare time).

You can begin to create your own economy.

In addition, if you have tried and failed at network marketing in the past it may have been the wrong time for you, you may have given up too soon, had the wrong coach, the wrong compensation or you just didn’t make an honest effort to succeed and give yourself the time needed to see success.

If you’re not experiencing success now, then evaluate and either get going in your present business or consider a change as a fresh start but only you can make that determination.

Ask 100 people if they’d rather

A. Work for a boss
B. Work at home for themselves

… and you’ll probably be able to count the number of people who answered A on one hand.

But ask that same 100 people how they currently make money, and you’ll probably get the opposite result.

The overwhelming majority…work for a boss!

So what gives? Why do so many people prefer B — but do A??

I’ll tell you.

It’s because they don’t think they have the time… the money… or the experience to succeed working from home…

….or they just aren’t sure where they should spend their effort to build a business.

Is that what you think and feel too?

That you don’t have the time, money, or experience to be your own boss?

The massive amount of hype on the net has caused people to join free programs, crazy biz-opps and MLM’s that are not sustainable or worse yet network marketing companies that may be popular but really bam-boozle you with 8-9-10 ways to pay (a couple of really good ones would be better) but the compensation may actually be brutal for the newbie or part-timer.

In the latter statement I’m not saying these are “bad MLM’s” but people get romanced by just the car bonus or they don’t understand that the triple-pay Star Fleet Commander matching bonus may take a whole lot more volume, rank level and organization than they realize.

In short, people aren’t sure if they can actually an build an organization of thousands and thousands of people in order to achieve this “freedom”. However, you may not need to do this if you select the right compensation plan that pays more money at the smaller group levels.

My advice is to maintain a logical mind when reviewing a business opportunity, just as you would a job or business outside of this niche.

Can you actually “figure” out how much money you’ll earn?

Try applying the following examples to an MLM you’re considering and see what you get in “residual” income only.

In other words, for now disregard fast start, one-time and other bonuses and just focus on the monthly residual income.

Enroll 4 and they each enroll 4 for a group size of 20 people (all averaging $100 BV)

Enroll 10 and they each enroll 10 for a group size of 110 people (all averaging $100BV)

The above numbers just cover the first two levels and some might say that we need to calculate 10-20 levels down but most won’t do that and that’s just the bottom line. Not that they can’t or won’t with a great coach, marketing plan and more.

Of course, you can figure out how much you earn with an organization that goes deeper and with a larger volume but for now…keep it simple.

Does the answer above (amount of monthly residual income) make sense to you?

Can you get into profit in a relatively short period of time so you aren’t forced to abandon the business?

Can you remove any hype and determine if the compensation plan is viable for you?

What exactly must you do and how fast can you ramp up to full-time income? (if this is your goal)

In addition, it’s perfectly fine to begin part-time as 95% of people begin this way.

Your goal is to pick a good company, with viable products, a stable and mature company with a compensation that pays well and makes sense, a great mentor to guide you and then get started right away.

It will be your choice if you want to add an extra $1,000, $2,000 a month or if you would eventually want to develop a full-time business earning $5,000, $10,000 a month or more.

You have greatness in you and I challenge you to step out in faith and achieve that freedom you want and deserve.

I recall getting into this profession many years ago when people would ask:

1) Do I have to sell soap door to door?

2) Is this some kind of pyramid scam?

3) What happens when everyone in the world has been sponsored? (these were the real knuckleheads)

4) Do I have to wear a suit and tie also? (I haven’t for years…)

That no longer happens and direct sales/network marketing is a flourishing profession that is attracting entrepreneurs of all types that are building part-time and full-time incomes.

The truth is today network marketing (direct sales) is a PROVEN business model and no longer out for vote.

You may like it or you may not but in most cases it is an often misunderstood profession; even by the millions that are in it!

I’ll agree there are some major differences in compensation plans among companies and this is an area where people just don’t understand exactly how they earn residual income, how much they get paid and exactly what they need to do in order to succeed; more on this later…

The Direct Selling Industry was recently featured in a 40 page spread in the Wall Street Journal. The information was great and a fantastic job was done to inform. It really provided a great representation of this awesome profession.

The front page of the report reads:

“In 2010, direct selling companies generated over 125 Billion dollars in revenue in 150 countries through more than 75 million men and women who are changing lives serving others”.

From March 2009 to May 2011, the top 7 publicly traded direct selling companies averaged a 268 percent increase in stock price!

The writing is on the wall my friends…

For those that don’t understand this; I encourage you to investigate further (but don’t check with your broke brother-in-law that can hold down a job as your primary resource).

Instead, check with and inform yourself from people that are “doing it”.

For those already in network marketing, I challenge you to rise to the top and select a company that has a great “residual” income plan. My personal opinion is companies with 8-9-10 ways to pay you usually don’t even have 1-2 good ones.

I will also say that as tempting as it is, don’t go with FREE (come on you know better than that!) or a high risk Pre-Launch and the “newest thing” or idea of the week is not usually the best either…

…this is usually just noise and history has shown us many of these companies have no long term staying power.

After all, you want to build residual income and have it pay you year after year. Am I right?

My advice is to keep it simple, straightforward, select a stable, long term company and that you’re easily able to calculate earnings and what you need to do in order to achieve the success you desire.

Align and connect with someone that can help you succeed with your business and I’m not talking about the “GURU” on stage. I realize that person is probably is awesome leader and a great recruiter but get with someone that can coach, encourage and teach you how to succeed; that’s what will really help you grow.
